Alberta’s Capital City, also known as the Festival City, is the proud host city of PLACE 18. Edmonton is the hub of North-central Alberta, and is the most northern metropolitan area of over one million people in North America. Edmonton’s urban form has experienced several exciting changes in recent years, including:

  • Downtown revitalization with the development of the ICE District and its iconic arena, construction of the tallest building in Western Canada, Winter Garden, and public plaza
  • Expansion of the light rail network, including the development of the Valley Line

  • Completion the Anthony Henday ring road, a part of the CANAMEX Corridor

  • Replacement of the Walterdale Bridge

  • Installation of the River Valley funicular, which increased accessibility to the largest interconnected park space in North America

  • Introduction of downtown bike lanes

  • Adoption of the WinterCity Strategy

  • Creation of alleyway businesses in the Old Strathcona Heritage Area

  • Home to Canada’s largest classic cross country ski event (Berkibeiner)
